I am writing in response to Wednesday’s article entitled “Beach: Patient bill at subcommittee.” The article identified witnesses paraded before the committee to testify on behalf of the deep-pocketed special interest group behind Senate Bill 141.
However, through what I am sure was an inadvertent oversight, the Cherokee Tribune failed to include any mention of the widespread and well-reasoned opposition to the senator’s bill.

ATLANTA (GA) – The Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services (DAS) informs Georgians that as of July 1, 2007, the new Georgia Advance Directive for Healthcare has replaced the Georgia laws on the Living Will and the Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare. This document combines the characteristics of both the living will and the durable power of attorney for healthcare and still allows people to choose for themselves the medical care they want when they are no longer able to communicate with doctors or family.
This is unconscionable!

Absent a DNR or Do Not Resuscitate order... these folks are in deep trouble.
Laws differ from state to state. In Georgia, they would have several levels of legal exposure likely criminal and civil.
Their real problem, as I see it, is the lady or nurse on the phone prevented anyone else from attempting by refusing to hand the phone off… “We are in a dining room”.
